Very hard discussions will be made around this topic and cost, location and type of care will all be on the chopping block when looking at where you or your elder parent will move into for the long term.

We will discuss how each type of senior housing is compared to one another and focus heavily on both nursing homes as assisted living facilities.

LOOKING AT YOUR LONG TERM CARE OPTIONS

INDEPENDENT LIVING & ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES

INDEPENDENT LIVING:

By far the most customization type of living option where there are usually multiple types of floor plans from economy to luxury furnishings. Usually equipment outdoor and indoor amenities, social activities with full concierge like staff with 24/7 available at some locations. Most provide licensed nurses for specialized services. Age group for Independent Living facilities would be for 55+.

ASSISTED LIVING:

While this group is more reliable on staff, they do not require total surveillance on a more mandatory basis like other long term care options we will discuss. Less amenities and more communal spaces such as a shared kitchen and limited meals. With the limited access to both social activities, appointments to see family members is also limited to certain visiting hours.

NURSING HOME CARE & SPECIALIZED NEEDS

NURSING HOMES:

This would be the most ideal for the most serious of illnesses mostly related to physical.  These properties have 24/7 care with the majority of the resident’s activities semi or completely structured and limited access to both family and friends by far more than independent and assisted living facilities. The living quarters are typically private apartments.

MEMORY CARE:

The most labor and capital intensive types of care would be for memory care properties. With the rise of both Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Baby Boomers, these type of care can be delivered in both the home of the elder in question or where they reside in the facility. Because of the nature of the mental illnesses, most areas are locked off to prevent a resident getting lost.
